"Will Be Removed To Salem--The remains of Father Wilbur, the
Methodist missionary, are interred in Lee Mission cemetery, near this city, as
is also the body of his wife. They died within a few days of each other
and were interred where it was their wish to rest. Their daughter, Mrs. Fackler, who preceded them to the grave by several years,
and who used to live in Salem, was buried in the cemetery near the Taylor
street M.E. church in Portland. Now the city has grown all around and
about that once retired little cemetery. The bodies were all removed long
ago--all except one, that of the pioneer missionary's daughter. Over it
many years ago a building, which is not occupied by the Pacific Christian
Advocate, was built over her grave. This property has been sold to the
A.O.U.W. of Portland, and in early spring that order will build a fine block on
the site. In this event the body of Mrs. Falker
will, no doubt, be exhumed and given interment in the Mission cemetery at
Salem. This Rev. Wilbur intended to do, but death overtook him before his
purpose was carried out. The trustees of Willamette

"Maureen C. Farnham, 59, of
Salem died here Tuesday.
She was born in Hillsboro, Wis., and moved to Salem in 1961 from Iowa.
She worked as a secretary for Christ Lutheran Church for 13 years.
For the past two years she served as office manager for Calvary Baptist
Church. She enjoyed counseling people.
In March 1954, she married Charles Farnham in
Waverly, Iowa.
Survivors include her estranged husband, Charles of Salem; sons,
Nathanael of Salem and Shaun of Tigard; and four grandchildren.
Graveside services will begin at 11 a.m. Friday in Lee Mission
Cemetery. Memorial services will begin at 1 p.m. Friday in Calvary
Baptist Church. Arrangements are by Howell-Edwards-Doerksen
mortuary.

"John Farris, Independence Resident,
Dies--Independence-John Edward Farris, 68, Independence resident for the past
22 years, died Sunday evening at his home following a short illness.
Farris was born April 11, 1890, at Glade Springs, Va., and moved to
Salem in 1906 and from there to Independence in 1936. He married the
former Levia L. Witzel on
Sept. 20, 1954, who survives him.

She married Willis C. Fenton in October 1930; he died in January 1969.
She married Paul L. Dietz on Sept. 17, 1982, in Salem.
She was a psychiatric aide for Oregon State Hospital for many years.
Her hobbies included bowling and ballroom dancing.
She is survived by her husband; sons, Dwight Fenton of Bend, and Stephen
and Stanley Fenton, both of Keizer; daughters, Janet Winston of Brownsville and
Monica Hortsch of Albany; brothers, Joseph Bricher of California and Vincent Bricher
of Cottage Grove; 23 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Visiting will be from 2 to 7 p.m. today in Rigdon-Ransom
mortuary, Salem. Rosary will be said at 7:30 tonight in the

"Charles Ficklin Dies in Alaska
Accident--Charles Ross Ficklin, known here and at
Falls City, was accident-ally killed about three miles east of Hyder, Alaska, where he was a taxicab driver, on Monday,
November 8, according to advices received by relatives here yesterday from a
brother who also is in Alaska. De-tails of the accident were not made
known in the message.
Mr. Ficklins' home was at Falls City, where
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.S. Ficklin, live.
The family came to Salem from California in 1891 and lived in Salem until 1909.
Mr. Ficklin's wife died four years ago.
He leaves two children Homer, 11 years old, and Arleta, 9 years old, and
besides his parents, one brother, Homer Ficklin of
Alaska, and two sisters, Mrs. C.J. Ramsden and Mrs.
Walter Taylor of Salem.
The body will be brought to Salem, leaving Stewart on the first
passenger boat coming out. Funeral arrangements will be made upon arrival
of the body here, under the direction of the Rig-don company. Interment

for the past 10 years at Oregon State Tuberculosis Hospital. He was born
at Mission Hill, S.D.
He leaves a widow, Mrs. Aletha Fiedler, Salem;
one son, Dale Fiedler, and one daughter, Mrs. Gwendolyn Barr, both of Chehalis,
Wash.; three brothers and seven sisters including Edward Fiedler and Mrs. Elizabeth ?, both of Los Angeles; Walter Fiedler, Mountain
View, Calif.; Mrs. Josie Colver, Kennewick, Wash.;
Mrs. Tillie Neilsen and Mrs. Sally Culver, both of

Mrs. C.E. Patterson, 2315 South Cottage street, May 28, 1919, was the widow of
Julius J. Field who died in 1887. She was the mother of eight children
and is survived by two sons, three daughters, 20 grandchildren and 32 great
grand-children. At the time of her death she was 80 years old.
Since 1914 Mrs. Field had made her home with her daughter, Mrs.
Patterson. Soon after her arrival in Salem she was united with the Free
Methodist church, having been an earnest Christian since her early youth."

1891, Daniel Fiester, aged 80 years, 6 months and 7
days.
Grandpa Fiester, one of Oregon's pioneers, was
born in Macoming county,
Pennsylvania, Feb 3, 1811, and at the age of 20 was married to Miss Rachael Ann
Darling, who still survives him. Together they crossed the plains in
1847, and took up a residence in Clackamas county. In 1850 he moved to Marion
county, where he resided eighteen years, during which
time he won the universal esteem of all who knew him. After a
period of eighteen years spent in this county, he took up a residence in
Josephine county, Southern Oregon, where he lived
until his health began to fail him, and he came to Salem to spend his remaining
years with his daughter.
Mr. Fiester leaves an aged partner who mourns
the departure of a devoted husband, with whom she has spent sixty bright and
prosperous years.
There were born to them ten child-ren, seven
of whom survive, three of them residing in this city: Mrs. W.C. Barker,
Mrs. R. Bates, and Dal. Fiester.
The funeral will take place from the residence of his daughter, at 158 Winter street, at 3 p.m. today. The remains will be
interred in the Lee Mission cemetery. The services will be conducted by

a.m. Her hands were folded across her breast, showing that she knew that
her life's journey was nearing an end.

Dead.--Stricken With Paralysis at Two Different Times--Burial in Missouri.--In
South Salem, Or., Wednesday, Oct. 18, 1899, of paralysis, Mrs. Robert Finch,
aged 68 years, passed away.
Deceased's maiden name was Mary Brown, and she was born in Warren county, Missouri, on the 25th of February, 1831. She
became the wife of Robert Finch on Dec. 8, 1856. They made their home in
Missouri until about 1896, when they moved to Salem, and resided here ever
since.
She was a cousin of Amos Strong, Mrs. John Hughes, and Mrs. C.D. Young,
of this city, and a granddaughter of Mrs. Brown, who founded the Pacific
University at Forest Grove.
Several weeks ago Mrs. Finch was stricken with paralysis, and the second
stroke came yesterday morning, causing her death.

Fisher, aged 65 years.
The deceased was born in Clinton county, Ohio,
in 1834, moving thence to Kearney, Nebraska. He came to Oregon in June,
1897, locating east of this city. He is survived by a wife and two
children, a son and a daughter, Carey Fisher and Mrs. Nora Bartlett, both of
whom reside at the family home. He served during the civil war in the
Seventy-ninth Ohio volunteer infantry, Twentieth Army Corps, and his health has
been very poor since the close of the war in 1865. He was a member of
Sedgwick Post No. 10, G.A.R., of this city and
also of the Union Veteran League. At an early age he became a member of
the Friends's church.
Funeral services will be held at the home at 2 o'clock this afternoon,
conducted by Rev. H.A. Ketchum, of the First Presbyterian church, of
Salem. After the services at the house, the G.A.R. will take charge of

"Mrs. Fiske Is Taken Friday; Funeral Today--Dallas--The last rites
for Charlotte Scott Fiske were held Saturday afternoon at the Methodist church
with Rev. L.C. Kirby officiating. She passed away at the home of her son,
V.P. Fiske, in this city Friday.
She was born November 11, 1840, in Pike county, Mo., and came west with
her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.J. Grubbe, in 1847.
She attended and graduated from Wilbur academy, a Methodist institution
situated in Douglas county.
She became the wife of Dr. E.R. Fiske at Roseburg on August 15,
1861. In 1862 they went to Boston, the doctor's old home and later moved
to Washington, D.C., where the doctor served as a surgeon during the war.
Dr. and Mrs. Fiske settled in Salem where he became dean of the medical
school at Willamette university. They were
located in Salem until the death of Dr. Fiske in 1877.
She is survived by her son in Dallas and Brigadier-General Harold B.
Fiske, now on duty at Atlanta, Georgia. She is also survived by six
grandchildren and four great grandchildren, also two sisters, Mrs. A.F.
Campbell of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Angie

"E.K. Fiske, M.D., died in Salem, Oregon, August 27, 1877.
He was born in Cambridgeport, Mass., June 4,
1817. He was a graduate of Browne Univer-sity,
Providence, R.I., and also of the Medical College connected with Harvard
University. His health failing he came to Oregon in 1849. He
resided in the southern part of the State till 1864, when he came to Salem, and
remained here till his decease. During all his residence in Oregon he
pursued the practice of medicine. His knowledge of medicine was of a very
high order, and was so recognized by his medical brethren, as the positions
accorded him in medical as sociatons sufficiently
testify. He was very active in reference to whatever would advance the
cause of medicine in the State. He was one of the founders of the Medical
Department of the Willamette University and during eight years of occupancy of
the chair of Theory and Practice, he proved himself a brilliant and graceful
lecturer. He was principal editor of the Oregon Medical and Surgical
Reporter and was a facile and forcible writer. He was one of the founders
of the Marion County Medical Society, and its president until it was merged
into the Third Judicial District Medical Society, and of this latter society he
was also for a time president. He helped to found the Salem Academy of
Medicine and was its president during its existence. He was also one of
the founders of the State Medical Society of Oregon. Then in the prime of
his powers, he was held in especial esteem as a counselor, many of his brethren
regarded his decision in critical cases as law. At an early age he was
won to Christ and united with the Baptist Church, of which his parents were
members. His parents designed him for the ministry, but his own choice
was medicine and he was educated accordingly. During the early part of
his residence in Oregon he seems to have lost his Church connections, but about
1860 he united with the M.E. Church. In 1861 he was united in marriage
with Charlotte S. Grubbe, of Roseburg, who with three
children survive him. For several years his
health has been gradually failing, largely unfitting him for the practice of
his profession, and as leisure increased he manifested a growing interest in
Sunday school work. He was a natural artist, and he made it his special
work to illustrate the Sunday school lessons upon the blackboard, and he did it
with a brilliancy and elaborateness probably unexcelled in any Sunday school in
the land. As a Christian he was diffident but sincere. As a man he
was genial, amiable, and generous; incapable of bitterness toward an enemy, and
rich in all human sympathies. Death, though thought to be not distant, at
length came suddenly, but it found him ready. Though for many days
seemingly in a spritual cloud, at the last came a
burst of heavenly moonlight upon his heart, and with his face radiant with it's brightness, he passed through

Cheryl was born in San Bernardino, Calif. where she spent her first 7 years.
She then moved to Blythe, Calif. where she later met and married Frederick
Flanagan. Their marriage produced her two sons, Brian and Nicholas. While in Blythe,
Sheryl worked for K-Mart and the Blythe Airport as a weather observer. After
her husband’s death she moved to Salem to be
around relatives and her childhood friend, Candice. That same year she met
David Pike and they were engaged to be married. Cheryl worked at the Denmark
House Care Home in Silverton for over two years where she made numerous friends
with co-workers. Cheryl loved life and enjoyed dancing, concerts, boating, or
going to Disneyland. Cheryl’s mascot in life was
that zany cartoon character Tiger.
Survivors include her fiance, David Pike of Salem; sons, Brian Flanagan and
Nicholas Flanagan, both of Salem; mother, Lynn Ellis of Salem; father, David
Ellis of Redmond; brother, Jason Ellis of Salem; and grandmother, Ellenor Lacy of Blythe, Calif.
Interment was at Lee Mission

J.H. Flower, who with five small children survives her. In 1891 she came
to Oregon with her husband from Sioux City, Iowa.
Mrs. Flower was an active worker in the Epworth League church and
temper-ance societies, and had a wide circle of
friends in Marion and Yamhill counties, whose sympathy is extended to the
bereaved family.

Franlin aged 83 passed away. Kay was born in Grand Island, Nebraska in 1939. She
grew up in a rural area, playing on local farms. As a young child, she moved
to Canon City, Colorado with her family when her father found a new job as
an accountant. Kay graduated from high school in 1957 and worked as a
typist. In the early 1960’s, she met the love of her life, Robert D.
Franklin, Jr. who had recently returned from serving in the Air Force in
Europe. When Kay moved to Salem, Oregon following her parents, Bob soon
followed suit and their relationship blossoned. Bob and Kay were married May
6, 1967 and raised their son Andrew in Salem. Kay was a consummate
homemaker, raising Andy, canning, sewing, knitting, and crocheting. Along
with Bob, Kay was dedicatied to serving others, especially in their church
and the Lion's Club. Kay was well known for knitting baby blankets for
church members, rolling coins to donate to church and helping Bob collect
glasses for the Lion's Club. Kay and Bob were avid train enthusiasts and
rode many historic trains across the US. Kay was preceded in death by her
husband of 54 years, Bob. She is survived by her son, Andrew Franklin, her
brother-in-law, Ben Franklin, and her nephew, Richard (Dana) Franklin. A
memorial service celebrating Kay’s life will be held Tuesday, March 7 at
10:30 a.m. at Salem First Presbyterian Church. Funeral arrangements are

October 16, 2021, Robert D. Franklin, Jr., aged 88 of Salem, Oregon passed away.
Bob was born in Akron, OH in 1933, but grew up on a dude ranch in Durango, CO.
After graduating from high school, Bob served in the Air Force as a language
specialist stationed in Germany during the Korean War. This experience ignited a
lifetime of public service and love of VW’s. Bob went on to serve as an Oregon
Air Reservist for a total of 28 years of military service. Bob received a degree
in forestry from Colorado State University, but worked as a social worker and in
the Oregon Department of Transportation before retiring in 1995. Following the
love of his life, Kathryn, to Salem, the two were married May 6, 1967 and raised
their son Andrew in Salem. Bob devoted his years in retirement to serving
others, whether that was at the church where Bob and Kay were active members,
Salem First Presbyterian Church, the Lion’s Club, or their local community. Bob
was also an avid train enthusiast and rode many of the narrow-gauge steam trains
across the US. Bob is survived by his wife of 54 years, Kay Franklin, his son
Andrew Franklin, his brother, R.G. Ben Franklin, and his nephew, Richard (Dana)
Franklin. A memorial service celebrating Bob’s life will be held Saturday,
November 6 at 10:30 a.m. at Salem First Presbyterian Church in Salem. Funeral

"Local Man Shot In Linn County--Lyons Scene of Gunplay By Mrs. Anna
Fullen--Condition of Victim Doubtful at Early Hour;
Physicians to Operate--The condition of E.H. Fullen,
shot last night by his wife, was reported at 3:30 o'clock this morning to be
very bad. Whether he will live or not is doubtful. The bullet
lodged in his intestines, according to Dr. Charles Brewer, who finished
operating just after 3 o'clock.--E.H. Fullen, 38, was
shot and seriously wounded last night at Lyons, in Linn county, by his wife,
Anna. Mrs. Fullen shot her husband with a small
caliber revolver, the bullet striking in his stomach.
Fullen was brought to Salem by Dr. Charles H. Bewer of Stayton, who was called immediately after the
shooting. Physicians were preparing to operate on him at an early hour
this morning and could give no statement as to his condition.
The shooting occurred in the kitchen of Henry Croisan's
home at Lyons, where Mrs. Fullen was employed as a
domestic.
The pair had been living apart for some time, and Fullen
had gone to visit his 6-year-old son, living with Mrs. Fullen.
The child's birthday was yesterday.
No details could be learned of the reason for the shooting. The
two were conversing in the kitchen of the Croi-san
home, with members of the Croisan family present.
There was no altercation between the two, as far as could be
learned. Mrs. Fullen went into the pantry,
where the revolver was kept, returned, and shot her husband once.
Bystanders disarmed her before she could shoot again.
Mrs. Fullen was brought to Salem and locked in
the county jail early today. She will be turned over to Linn county
authorities, according to Sheriff O.D. Bower.
Sheriff Bower questioned Mrs. Ful-len, but she
would make no statement other than to say that she was unwilling to live with
her husband, although he had urged her to do so repeatedly.
Fullen, a cook had been employed in Salem
recently, Sheriff Bower stated this morning.
Lyons is in Linn county, just south of the

“Virginia W. Furtwangler, a prize-winning author,
inspiring teacher, devoted mother, and delightful companion, died on January 1,
2024, at the age of 91. She came to Salem in 1996 as the first Hallie Ford
Professor of English at Willamette University, a high point in a life of
dramatic changes and reinventions.
Ginny was born in Hartford,
Connecticut to William and Agnes Walsh, grew up in Waterbury, and attended
Catholic schools there. Her father died when she was 13, and she made it through
her teens with the support of her resilient mother and brother, Walsh relatives,
and close neighbors.
She was active and popular at the College of New Rochelle, a Catholic women’s
college in New York, and was elected president of her class and later of the
entire student body. She was by turns a popular, diligent student and an
independent spirit. A cadet once escorted her to a dance at nearby West
Point—and a dean later scolded her for leading a conga line at a dance back on
her own campus. She wrote the musical score for a student show. She led
classmates down Fifth Avenue on Saint Patrick’s Day in 1954 and was stopped for
a brief TV interview. The announcer boldly kissed her as a “pretty Irish
colleen” and asked what her plans were after graduation. She replied that she
was committed to enter the Ursuline religious order, which she did that July.
As Sister John Bernard (names of
two admired saints) she completed an M.A. in English at Catholic University,
then taught in Ursuline high schools in Maryland and the Bronx and in college
back at New Rochelle. In 1966 she was directed to start graduate work in English
literature at Cornell University; with the support of a national Kent Fellowship
she completed her Ph.D. in 1970.
She left the Ursuline order in
1967. Later that year she began study sessions with Albert Furtwangler, a fellow
graduate student. They struck up a playful conversation that would continue and
deepen for over 56 years. They married when he finished his degree, and moved
together to Chicago and then to the small college town of Sackville, New
Brunswick, Canada, as Al pursued his teaching career. In Sackville, Ginny and Al
raised two sons and built a community of friends that endures to this day. A
devoted mother, Ginny searched out special instruction and opportunities for
each of her sons.
Meanwhile, she taught extension courses and began to write short stories under
the pen name Ann Copeland. She eventually published six collections of stories.
The Golden Thread was a finalist for the Governor-General’s Award, Canada’s top
literary prize, in 1989. She also wrote The ABCs of Writing Fiction. Her books
led to short-term appointments as a teacher and writer-in-residence at colleges
across Canada and the US, notably at the University of Idaho, Linfield College,
and the Portland State summer program in Cannon Beach.
Ginny also sustained a lifelong
love of music. She led choirs in her convent years, later studied organ and jazz
improvisation, served as church organist in Sackville, and played four-hand
piano with partners in both Sackville and Salem. In recent years, she hosted
Monday practice sessions with fellow musicians, and she and Al opened their
house to neighbors who came to listen. She and Al attended concerts and opera
series in Salem, Portland, Seattle, New York, and Santa Fe. They also took
social dance lessons and in the Sackville years brought the boys to an annual
dance camp.
Through shared interests, good conversation, music, and her fondness for
hosting gatherings, Ginny built close friendships in every season of her long,
rich, and multifaceted life. And with friends far afield, Ginny always kept in
touch. She corresponded, she called, she looked people up on her travels. And
many an old classmate, neighbor, student, and colleague reciprocated, coming
long distances to visit and catch up. At their 60th class reunion this year,
students from 1959 remembered her as a teacher who changed their lives—and wrote
to tell her so.
Survivors include her husband Albert, sons Tom and Andrew, and granddaughter
Claire.
A Mass of Christian Hope is scheduled for Saturday, February 17 at 10:30 at
Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 4227 Lone Oak Road SE, Salem, followed by a
reception. Suggested donations include The Music Lessons Project; Camerata
Musica; and Oregon Symphony in Salem.
