Burial Listing for surnames beginning with - H -

1) A single rose beside a burial listing indicates an unmarked grave.  If you find that your family member is unmarked and you wish to place a marker, please contact the Lee Mission Cemetery Board to discuss your options and to notify them of your intent.

2) A box with an "R" in it preceding a burial listing indicates a reserved plot

3) The number to the right of the death date is the burial plot number and can be used in the plot search option  to find out who is buried in adjoining plots.  An N/A in the plot location indicates that although the individual is known to have been buried in the cemetery, the exact location is not known at this time.   All additions and corrections are appreciated and can be sent to stephenie@leemissioncemetery.com.

"Salem--Fred Hallauer passed away peacefully at home from Alzheimer's complications  Fred was born in Kansas City, MO to Fred and Kathryn Hallauer and spent his younger years in Missouri. In 1955 he married Nadene Pearson. Fred and Nadene had three children. After graduating from the University of Montana and serving four years in the Air Force, Fred worked for various companies including the Oregon Farm Bureau, Fred Meyer data processing, where he was instrumental in installing their first computer system, Blue Cross of OR, Evans Products, and the State of Oregon.
In 1977 he married Cora Leitzke Hescock. Fred suffered a massive brain-stem stroke in 1993 forcing early retirement. He always said he didn't know what he would do when he retired- well after working hard at therapy and a miraculous recovery he enjoyed many activities. The Courthouse Athletic Club was one of his favorite "hang outs" from 1980 to 2000. He enjoyed Men's Bible Study Fellowship, Stephens Ministry, and Men's Prayer Breakfast at the Nazarene Church with his best friend Steve. He and Cora made two road trips across the United States, traveled abroad and spent winters in Mazatlan where they have many friends. His children and grandchildren were the light of his life and he loved playing games with them, coaching them through their daily problems and loving them unconditionally. Dad's lectures were always their "favorite" conversations.
Surviving Fred are his wife and six children. Barbara (Gary) Bauman of Japan, Maria (Tom) Fuhrmann of Newberg, OR, Debra (Eric) Bergen of Cameron Park, CA, Doug (Patrice) Hescock of Kennewick, WA, Melissa Hescock of Salem, and David (Hollie) Hallauer of Roseville, CA; Gretchen Schumacher, a dear friend and his favorite caregiver; thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

"William Reid Hanson --September 5, 1915 - May 19, 2011--SALEM - William Reid Hanson, 95, died Wednesday May 19 in Salem, Oregon. He was born in Oregon City, Oregon on September 5, 1915 and lived in Salem most of his life. He was the son of William E. and Harriet Marden Hanson.
His family loved to explore the Oregon outdoors. In the 1920's they drove and camped across the country in a Model T to Washington, D.C. While there he saw Babe Ruth hit a home run. He was a life-long sports fan, especially of the Oregon State Beavers.
Reid started fishing Oregon's streams in the 1920's. He fly-fished the Deschutes and Metolius rivers, salmon-fished in a dory boat at Pacific City, and was a steelhead fisherman. Reid graduated from Salem High School in 1933. He worked as a draftsman for a title company and then for Kaiser Shipyards building aircraft carriers and Liberty ships. In 1943 he enlisted in the Army and was assigned to the Army 29th Engineers at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. His unit sailed for France in Jan. 1945 and was stationed near Paris to make maps for troops from aerial photos. Thus he was in Paris for the VE Day celebrations--he saw a plane fly under the Eiffel Tower. He was part of the occupation force in Germany and then came home in 1946.
He graduated from Oregon State University in 1950 with a degree in civil engineering. He worked on several airport building projects in Alaska, Morocco and Spain for Morrison-Knudsen Company. He married Margaret Lovell in 1955 and they lived in Seville, Spain for several years. They moved to Salem where he worked for the State as an engineer with the Dept. of General Services and the Board of Control. He worked on the Capitol Mall buildings, the State Capitol wings addition, and the Charles Sprague fountain on the Mall. He retired in 1980. After retirement he began bird-watching and joined the Salem Audubon Society which led to many trips with his birding buddies throughout Oregon and the world. He traveled to Antarctica to bird at age 84.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church and a long-time supporter of many civic and charitable organizations.
He is survived by his children, John Hanson of Salem, Erica Hanson of Salem, Robert Hanson of Bellevue, Washington and Anne Hanson Hearon (Bill) of San Rafael, California. He will be greatly missed.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Salem Audubon Society. Service to be held at Barrick Funeral Home in Salem on Wednesday May 25 2011 at 11:00 a.m. [Statesman Journal May 24, 2011]

35th Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal church
"The Late Bishop E.O. Haven--A Brief Sketch of the Life of this Eminent Divine--Bishop Erastus Otis Haven, whose death was announced in The Oregonian of yesterday, was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1820.  He was graduated at the Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut, in 1842, and soon after entered the ministry.  He was appointed teacher of natural science in the Amenia Seminary, N.Y., and in 1845 was elected principal of that institution.  In 1854 he was elected professor of Latin and Greek in the university of Michigan.  In 1865 he was elected editor of the Zion's Herald and Wesleyan Journal, the oldest Methodist newspaper in the world.  He immediate-ly returned to Boston to take charge of that paper, which posisiton he held for many years.
In the struggle with slavery begun in the Methodist church long before it entered the national councils, Bishop Haven took a prominent part, and his ready and vigorous pen dealt heavy and effective blows through the columns of his widely circulated journal.  During his residence in Boston, he was called to serve the people in the legislature of Massachusetts.  Subsequently he was called to the presidency of the university of Michigan.  He afterwards became president of the Northwestern university at Evanston, Ill.
Some years later he was elected president of the university located at Syracuse, N.Y.  At the last session of the general conference of the M.E. church of the United States, held a year ago last month, he was elected bishop and sent to labor in the southernstates.  Last spring he was assigned to the Pacific coast.  He immediately came and took up his residence in San Francisco.  His first opportunity, we believe, to preside at any conference, was in Oregon, and death has closed his career before conference meets.
The deceased has left behind many valuable works, which have been published from time to time during his active life.  He was said to have been one of the ablest men in the great denomination to which he belonged.  He was a cousin of the late Bishop Gil-bert Haven, with whom he has labored for many years, and whose name has sometimes been confounded with that of Bishop Haven just deceased.
The funeral will take place at Salem at 2 o'clock P.M.  In compliance with the last request of the Bishop, the remains will be laid to rest in the old Lee Mission cemetery near Salem." PCA Aug 11, 1881 See also: PCA Aug 25, 1881

SALEM-John Emery Herbert was born July 29, 1929 to John Robert Herbert and Mary Emily Beaman Herbert in Forest Grove, Oregon.
He passed away peacefully on July 6, 2019 at the age of 89 surrounded by family.

He graduated from O.C.E. with a Bachelors’ degree in Elementary Education in 1951 and later earned his masters’ degree from the University of Oregon.

John said the most important event of his college years was meeting Donna Olson, his future wife. They were married May 25, 1952 in Albany, Oregon and were married for 59 years.
John started his teaching career in Roseburg, Oregon. He moved to Eugene soon after and worked at Cascade Junior High in the Bethel School District.

In 1968 John joined the State Department of Education in Salem as a specialist in junior high school education. He was then principal of Walker Junior High School, Whitaker Junior High and Hoover Elementary Schools.
He retired in 1985 when Donna became ill. After she recovered, John became a licensed and bonded contractor, painting and doing minor remodeling jobs.
His hobbies included carpentry, painting, genealogy, family and people. He was very active in the Methodist church. John never met a stranger. He was very generous with his time. He loved to visit elderly people and entertain his grandchildren.
We would like to thank the staff and residents at Gibson Creek Assisted living for their kindness in caring for Dad. They truly made him feel like family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Donna, stepsisters Della Starr, Merle Purkerson, and Mildred Judson, brother Leighton and sister Evelyn Aronson. He is survived by brother Dewey, son Stephen of Powell Butte, daughter Luanne Smith of Helena, MT (John) and son John and daughter-in-law Rhonda Herbert of Salem, 8 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
There will be a Memorial Service Saturday, July 27 at 2:00 p.m. at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service. In lieu of flowers, please do a random act of kindness for someone you don’t know or befriend someone less fortunate than yourself.  Salem Statesman-Journal, July 21, 2019, C-9

"Ann Johnson was born in Canada in 1845.  What part and when the family came to the United States is unknown.  They may have moved to various places before ending up in either Rockland, Washington Territory or The Dalles, Oregon Territory.  Rockland is now known as Dallesport, Washington directly across the Columbia River from The Dalles.
In 1870 Ann was living with her aged father.  If they actually lived in Rockland there was no church there, but a Methodist Church had been established in The Dalles.  A ferry served between Rockland and The Dalles, so if in fact the Johnson family resided in Rockland it would have been an easy crossing and walk to church.  Serving that church at the time was Rev. Gustavus Hines.  What actually brought Gustavus and Ann together is another fact that is not know.  Ann would have been considered a "spinster" by then as she was 25 at that time.  Gustavus was 36 years her senior.  It appears that Gustavus' first wife Lydia may have died prior to his going to The Dalles.  A number of things might have played into the marriage between Gustavus and Ann coming together.  The fact that Gustavus needed and wanted a wife, someone to stand by him in church related functions.  Ann on the other hand was faced with the fact that she was still unmarried and had an aged father.  It certainly was not a "young love" marriage.
Ann had a brother named Thomas Johnson.  At one time he actually ran the ferry between Rockland and The Dalles.  He must have had some back ground in surveying, for when John Golden decided that he was going to form his new town of Goldendale, it was Thomas Johnson who was hired to plat out the settlement.  Golden was very intent on having this town, so he set aside 9 lots for the first person that would come forward and establish the first store.  Thomas Johnson took up the offer, built and established his store in the town of Goldendale.
Golden also being a religious Methodist designated 12 lots, a city block for the building of a church, which the townspeople soon had up and running in 1871.  They would need a minister and would have gone through the Methodist channels to acquire one.  The man in charge of that region was none other than Rev. Gustavus Hines, who was residing in The Dalles.  He himself came at various times to give lessons and preach, while waiting for a permanent minister to arrive.
The Goldendale area was just being settled, by homesteaders arriving.  Down east of there was a very fledgling community called Columbus, now known as Maryhill, Washington.  One of the original vast land owners was a man by the name of William Hicenbothem, who resided there with his wife Mary.  He was an ardent Methodist himself and it was not uncommon in those times for people to go a great distance to attend church.
No doubt Gustavus Hines and William Hicenbothem met in Goldendale, where Hicenbothem would no doubt talk about his hopes of building a Methodist church in little Columbus, which did come to pass, as Hicenbothem later gave the land for the Methodist Church.
Gustavus and Ann were married in 1871, no doubt in the Methodist Church in The Dalles.  In 1872 Ann gave birth to a daughter, which they named Gussie.
Gussie was not very old when Gustavus died and Ann was placed in a situation of probably not knowing what to do.  Here she was with a tiny little girl, with no husband and no means of income.  She had no alternative but to move to Goldendale to live with her brother Thomas Johnson and his family, or reside in close poximity to them.
Gussie would not have a mother for long and it seems that Ann was ill for sometime before she actually died of consumption in 1875 when Gussie was about 3 years old.  When she found out that she was dying she may have herself made plans for little Gussie's care.  It is not known why Thomas Johnson did not take his niece.  He had 4 children of his own and possibly just couldn't take on another.
Again into the picture comes William and Mary Hicenbothem.  They would have known Gustavus Hines early when he was getting the Goldendale Methodist Church going and quite probably knew Ann as well after she moved to Goldendale.  They were childless, apparently even for the times financially sound and were very devout Methodists in Columbus.  They may have taken Gussie even before Ann died, as it is apparent that there was a time that came when she would not have been able to herself care for Gussie.  So little Gussie ended up down along the Columbia River in Columbus with her new "foster" parents, William and Mary Hicenbothem, while Ann's remains were taken back to be buried with Gustavus in Salem.  The entire Gustavus Hines, Ann Thompson story is one of tragedy.  Gussie herself died in 1880 of diptheria, which also claimed a few others in the little community of Columbus.  Gussie is buried in the Hicenbothem plot at what is now called  Maryhill-Columbus Cemetery, a portion of that cemetery land donated by none other than William Hicenbothem.  There is no stone there for little Gussie, but someone did erect a stone in her memory with her parents, Gustavus and Ann (Johnson) Hines."  [written by Charlott Wells Jones

"Death of Rev. G. Hines--Another pioneer of Methodism on this coast has gone to the better land.  The event has not been unexpected.  For more than two years Bro. Hines has been slowly, but perceptibly, failing in health, waiting calmly, hopefully, trustfully for the final summons home.  On Tuesday morning last, about 11 o'clock, at his residence in Salem, he peacefully breathed his last, aged 64 years.
Rev. Gustavus HInes entered the Methodist Itinerancy in 1832.  The first circuit he traveled was Franklinville, Genessee Conference, Western New York.  The successive fields of labor assigned him in that Conference, belabored there until the following Spring when he was stationed at Salem.  At Salem he continued his residence for fourteen years, filling acceptably, the most important position as Presiding Elder, and preacher in charge of the various fields of labor to which he was appointed.  It is unnecessary to this connection, perhaps, to mention the particular appointments received.  In August 1869, he was sent by Bishop Kingsley to the Dalles.  In March following, he was called upon to bury his beloved wife who had nobly stood by him during all the forty years of his itinerant life.
Bro. Hines was re-appointed to the Dalles during the succeeding year.  His labors there were very acceptable and useful.  During this second year at that place he was united in marriage to Miss M. Johnson, a choice  which has ever proved to a wise, judicious and happy one.  Finishing the year at the Dalles, he then removed to Oregon City, where, while laboring with his wonted energy and zeal, he contracted a disease of the lungs from which he never finally recovered.  He was compelled to take a superannuated relation to the Confer-ence, and removing to Salem, spent the rest of his life amid the endearments of his home, writing, reading, and working all that his constantly failing strength would admit.
Thus lived and died a noble worker for Jesus.  He was a man of uncommon muscular frame, with a voice of great force and compass.  Few men were favored with a more commanding and majestic personal appearance than he.
The great leading feature in his character, which shone conspicuously at all times was his fervant piety.  His conversation, his prayers, his sermons, were all imbued with his spirit of consecration to the Master's service, and ever added to his useful influence over his fellow beings.
His unselfishness in worldly inter-ests was worthy of commendation.  His record shows that, although golden opportunities were afforded him of taking up land, and making money, yet he invariably declined all such tempting offers, and ever devoted himself exclusively to the work of neat expositions of the Word of Life will mourn that they can hear his voice no more.  Let all but imitate his unselfish devotion to the cause of Christ, and then they may rejoice in anticipation of meeting him high up among the joyful inhabitants of the skies.
He leaves a devoted wife and one small daughter, around whom the Christian sympathy and kind offices of the entire Conference will doubtless be extended in this the sad day of their deep bereavement and loss.  Two affectionate brothers, also--Rev. H.K. Hines, in East Oregon and Washington Conference, and Rev. Joseph Hines of the California Conference--are left to mourn the loss of a true and faithful brother. `Blessed are the dead which died in the Lord from henceforth.'"   "The remains of the late Rev. H.K. Hines, D.D., and that of his deceased wife were removed recently from Lone Fir cemetery, Portland, to the Lee Mission cemetery, Salem, and interred in the Diamond Square, where so many of the early missionaries are buried.  A year ago last Decoration Day Dr. Hines visited the graves of his heroic associates, and he talked of the people who are buried there and of the duty of our church to erect a fitting memorial.  It ought to be done.  In the Diamond Square there should be a monument to the men and women who brought Christianity and civilization to this Western shore." [The following was transcribed from the Pacific Christian Advocate, Vol. XVI. No.. 14, 2 Apr., 1870, by H.J. Peters, third great grandnephew of Gustavus Hines.]  "
Outline of the life of Mrs. Lydia Hines--She was born in Winfield, Herkimer Co., N.Y., March 27th, 1811. She was the daughter of Royal Bryant, Esq., and connected with the large family of Bryants inMassachusetts. Her father and mother were both praying people, and noted in community for their ardent and uniform piety. These traits of character led them to commence the moral and religious training of their children in early infancy, and continue it so long as they remained under the paternal roof. As a result they had the satisfaction of seeing all their children walking in the ways of religion.
Though often concerned for her spiritual welfare, the subject of this memoir did not receive permanent religious impressions until she arrived to maturity.  She was fully awakened to a sense of her spiritual destitution in 1828 under the labors of Rev. Ephraim Hall, of precious memory; and after passing through a most severe struggle in breaking away from the gay world, at the shrine of whose pleasures she had been an ardent devotee, in September of that year, she bowed before the family altar at which her father and mother were knelt, and besought them to pray for her.
The prayer of faith at once ascended to the throne, and while in the fullness of her agonizing heart she was repeating the words of Dr. Watts:   “Here, Lord, I give myself away, ‘Tis all that I can do,”  the precious answer came, and peace and joy filled her soul. From this it will be seen that her conversion was remarkably clear, and knowing from this bright experience that Christ hath power on earth to forgive sins, she at once became an ardent laborer in the Lord’s vineyard. She immediately united with theM.E. Church, to the communion of which she was soon followed by her parents, who for many years had been devoted members of theBaptist Church; and also by all her brothers and sisters who had arrived to adult years. She was married in the church at West Winfield, Oct. 17th, 1830, by Rev. Calvin Hawley, to Gustavus Hines, then a private member of the church. In the following winter, by sleigh, through accumulating snows, they removed westward to the distance of 250 miles, and settled in the woods of Cattaraugus Co., Ellicottsville township. Here her surroundings for two years were indeed of a very humble though honorable character. The log cabin, rough on the exterior, but ornamented within by love and industry, in connection with the furniture of the shoe-bench, and pressboard of the tailoress—a small clearing in the forest, where beech, maple, linn, oak and hickory stumps gave evidence that the axman had commenced the process of opening a farm; these and such like characteristics of a wilderness country just beginning to yield to an advancing civilization, marked the scenery in the midst of which she and her youthful companion found themselves in the summer of 1832. In October of this year her husband received his first license to preach the gospel, and was appointed by his presiding elder to travel the circuit on which they were living; and by this strange providence she very unexpectedly found cast upon her the responsibilities incident to the life of a Methodist itinerant preacher’s companion. In all her calculations for the future, she had made no reckoning for this; and for a while it was a source of the severest trial. Itinerating as a Methodist minister’s wife, was to her synonymous not only with crushing responsibilities, but with want, destitution, mendicancy. The prospect appalled her, and she recoiled in its contemplation. By a few months, however, of mingling with people, during which she contributed largely to the promotion of an extensive revival, she became convinced that the call of the Church was indeed the call of God: and accordingly yielded the controversy and prepared herself as best she could to become a co-laborer in the gospel field.
In this capacity, the following are the outlines of her travels. Beginning with the Franklinville circuit, Genesee Conference, in Western New York, the next field of labor was the old Ridgeway circuit, 100 miles northward; the next Pekin, Erie Co., embracing Niagara Falls; from thence to Otto, Cattaraugus Co.; and then in the following year to Lodi, and the next to Pike village in Wyoming Co. On each of these fields of labor there were extensive revivals, in each of which she took an active and very efficient part. During her seven years residence on these fields of labor she witnessed the conversion of about 600 souls, and in counsel, exhortation, and altar work, was perhaps the most successful laborer employed. Besides this, possessing the rare faculty of adapting herself to circumstances, she was remarkably popular with all classes of people among whom she was called to move. Early in the spring of 1839 she was called upon to endure perhaps the most severe trial of her life; the severing of all ties that bound her to the land of her nativity, the committal of herself to the treacherous storms of ocean, and in connection with others, to seek, as a missionary, a far distant home on the then almost unknown shores of the great Pacific.
A few months were employed in visiting her friends and bidding them what she then supposed her last adieu. This accomplished, with her husband, she then repaired toNew York city, and the evening of Oct. 9th, 1839 found her for the first time on the deck of a ship. Nearly eight months of ocean life, during which she was permitted to look in upon Brazil, Chili, and the Sandwich Islands, acquainted her with the lights and shadows of a sea voyage in a crowded vessel, of 2,200 [must have been more – perhaps 22,000?] miles. June 1st, 1840 found her atVancouver, and exchanging the shipLausanne for a Chinook canoe, by which craft the waters ofOregon were then navigated, she arrived on the 15th of the same month at the old Mission stand, situated ten miles below the present city ofSalem. Early in the spring of 1841 it was her lot to occupy a small shanty located near what is called the “old parsonage” in said city, and thus she had the honor of being the first white woman that lived in the original precincts of the present Capital of the State ofOregon. Thrown as she was into the midst of savages, and often witnessing evidences of their hostile dispositions, and hearing of their murderous designs, she entertained at times great fear that she and her family would yet fall victims to savage fury—and the more so as she now had under her protection a young and helpless sister. One day, at the dusk of evening, in the fall of the year, while the neighborhood was agitated by rumors of Indian outbreaks, there appeared immediately in front of the parsonage 12 mounted savages of the Molalla tribe, painted and accoutred in the most hideous and frightful manner, and rushing up into the very dooryard, all dismounted, giving evidence at the same time that their visit was not friendly. Mr. H. went out to meet them, and approaching the one who appeared to be their leader, offered him his hand in token of friendship. He refuse the proffered signal, and immediately the whole band set up a horrid laugh. This demonstration of hostility so alarmed Mrs. Hines that she resolved to take her little sister, and if possible, effect her escape to a house on the north side of Mill Creek, nowNorth Salem, occupied by the families of Messrs. L. H. Judson and James Olley, the only house within many miles. She took a circuitous route for a distance down the little stream running in the rear of the parsonage, so as to keep from the sight of the Indians as long as possible. Sometimes leading little Julia by the hand and at others lifting her in her arms, she struck across the prairie northward, struggling through the tall grass with her precious burden, while expecting every moment to be pursued and feel the violent hand of a savage laid upon her. On reaching the creek, not daring to extend her flight to a foot bridge a short distance below, she dashed straight through the current, bearing her sister in her arms. Not being pursued, she gained the house in safety, and collecting all the adult persons belonging to the families, she returned with them through the darkness to look after the fate of her husband. The savages had in the meantime encamped in [the] rear of the parsonage, where they remained quietly for a few hours, and then before daylight decamped, bearing with them as booty some provisions and a valuable horse, the property of Mr. H. Here was the scene of Mrs. Hines’ cares and labors to Dec. 1843. In the spring of 1842, by the death of Mrs. Jason Lee, their infant daughter, but three weeks old, was taken by Mrs. Hines from the bed where its mother, just deceased, still reposed, and conveyed to her own home. This was the providence which resulted subsequently, when Mr. Lee was on his dying bed, in his full commitment of this beloved daughter to her sole guardianship and training during the period of her minority.          For reasons which need not be inserted in this sketch, Mr. Lee, Mr. and Mrs. Hines and family, leftOregon in Feb. 1844, intending to proceed to the Eastern States. But on arriving atHonolulu it was found that there was no vessel which would sail for any of the Atlantic ports for several months. It was however ascertained that a small Hawaiian schooner about to sail for San Blas, on the coast ofMexico, would take one person on board. And Mr. Lee being exceedingly anxious to proceed, took passage in hope of being able in some way to get fromMexico toNew York: while Mr. Hines and family, including Mr. Lee’s daughter, decided to return toOregon. It was here, on theIsland ofOahu, in the midst of the solitudes of the great Pacific, and after the little company had spent a whole night in prayerful solicitude, without any prospect of ever meeting again this side of Heaven, that Mrs. Hines received more fully the important charge committed to her by Mr. Lee. It was on the 28th of Feb., 1844, that with flowing tears and words of tenderest sympathy and love Mrs. Hines received the daughter from the arms of the weeping father, and made a solemn pledge before Heaven, that all a mother could do for a daughter she would do, God being her helper, for the motherless child that then in her heart of hearts she adopted as her own. Mr. Lee never saw his child again, and she was never separated from that second mother until a few days since, when that mother took her flight to Heaven.
According to arrangement Mrs. Hines with her family returned again toOregon, and arrived atOregon City the last of April. Residing there for the best part of two years, she was remarkably active in Church interests, but especially in searching out the destitute among the emigrants who crossed the plains, and in affording the needed relief. During the years 1844-5, in company with her husband, she visited every portion ofOregon then occupied by whites, for Missionary purposes, traveling on horseback and in canoes.
In September 1845, for reasons that need not be here appended, it became the duty of Mrs. Hines to leaveOregon again and return to the States. Accordingly, she with Mr. H. and their two adopted daughters bade a second adieu to the wooded mountains ofOregon, and on the Brig Chenamus performed another voyage to theSandwich Islands, where they arrived on the 15th of October. This was her third visit to theseIslands, where in all she spent upwards of three months.Providence so ordered that from the Islands, she had the opportunity of crossing the Pacific Ocean to the coast ofChina and of spending upwards of two months among the Celestials atHong Kong, Macao, andCanton. From thence, in the good ship Leeland, the Chinese andJava Seas were traversed, the Straits of Sunday penetrated, the Indian Ocean crossed, the Cape of Good Hope doubled, the Atlantic Ocean again traced, and on the 5th of May the missionary family arrived in safety atNew York city.
The following September found the subject of this memoir a resident in the town of Victor, Ontario Co., to which her husband had been appointed, who during all these years had retained his connection with the Genesee Conference. Her travels for the next eight years may be summed up in few words. They were removed from Victor to thevillage ofPike, thence toCovington, thence toLancaster, and last to Spencer’s Basin [later known as Spencerport]. Her uniform character during these years was that of a faithful, devoted, useful, Methodist preacher’s wife. While residing in the latter place, in 1853 [should be 1852 – Gustavus’ transfer was published in the paper in Dec. 1852], very unexpectedly to her husband she informed hin that she would be glad to return again to thePacific Coast, and there spend the remainder of her days. Sympathizing in this feeling, Mr. Hines asked of Bishop Waugh and obtained a transfer to the Oregon Conference, with the privilege of returning to the country by way of the Plains. The journey across the Plains, which was performed the same year [actually next year, 1853], was one of great interest to Mrs. Hines though attended with great toil and exposure. It was also marked by many thrilling incidents, all but one of which must here be passed over. The company to which she belonged were nooning onBurnt River where the grass and herbage were exceedingly dry. While she was engaged in preparing dinner, the sun shining brightly on the earth, she did not observe that the fire was running under her feet. Her dress, which was of cotton, took fire and she almost instantly became enveloped in flames. Some one exclaimed “Mrs. Hines will burn up.” Mr. Hines hearing this and looking up saw that not an instant was to be lost; and, springing at once to the rescue, seized the burning dress with both hands, and with one effort tore the entire garment from her person, and casting it upon the ground, in one moment it was reduced to ashes. She has always believed that she was thus saved from the terrible fate of being burned to death. Their first place of residence after reachingOregon in October, 1853 was on theVancouver circuit; and in the spring of 1854 by virtue of the appointment of Mr. H. toSalem she became a resident of that city. On this year she received a third orphan [this was Marie Smith] into her family and into her heart: and in her education and training she ever manifested the care, solicitude and affection of a most devoted mother. Here, for fourteen years she has had a settled home, though from time to time she has extended her travels to various parts of the State andWashington Territory. Wherever she has been she has not failed to leave the impression of her many excellencies upon all who understood her character. In this home she closed her highly useful and eventful life in great peace, March 14th, 1870. Though her last sufferings were great, and protracted, her patience, her faith, her hope were strong and unwavering. Her joy in the Lord at times was triumphant. “All is peace;” “All is bright;” “Praise the Lord” were some of her last expressions. The dying hour of the Christian! ‘Tis the most solemn, yet it is the most sublime, the most glorious hour of their lives.   N. Rounds  [The Rev. Nelson Rounds, D.D. was a first cousin of Gustavus. Nelson’s father, Alfred Round, was a younger brother of Gustavus’ mother, Betsey Round. SALEM - Karla Holdun, beloved spouse of Jim; beloved mother of Britta and Andrew; beloved daughter of Pat and Duane; beloved sister of Lori, Lisa, and Debbie; beloved aunt to Sara, Kayla, Mckenna, Hailie, Megan, Mathew, and Nick; beloved by all her extended family; beloved teacher and friend to so many -- passed away at home following a long, hard-fought war against breast cancer -- battling to the very end.
She fought her disease with incredible courage and dignity that inspired everyone who knew her during this time. Cancer could not tame her irrepressible spirit, her joy of working at Aumsville Elementary School, or the love she showered on her family and friends, and the children she taught and counseled. The beautiful person she was always shined through despite the ravages that the cancer inflicted upon her body.
Karla was born on Father’s Day, June 19, 1960 in Portland, Ore., to Pat and Duane Gemaehlich. She attended La Grande High School, received a degree in education from the University of Oregon, and after teaching at Terrebonne Elementary in Central Oregon and Aumsville Elementary in the Willamette Valley, earned a Master’s in Counseling from Lewis and Clark College.
Karla was active in the fight against breast cancer, organizing the Celebrate the Moment team to raise funds for the annual Susan B. Koman Race for the Cure. She enjoyed jazzercise, walking with friends, and trips to the beach. But the focus of her life was her family and the children and staff of the schools she taught and counseled in.
She will be deeply missed and long remembered by everyone who was fortunate enough to know her.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thurs., Nov. 3 at Barrick Funeral Home, who is handling the arrangements. A private graveside service will be held Fri., Nov. 4, at Lee Mission Cemetery. A celebration of life will take place at 11 a.m., Sat., Nov. 5, at Cascade High School, Turner, Ore. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Karla Holdun Aumsville Elementary School Memorial Fund c/o Kim Davis at Aumsville Elementary School, the Susan B.   "Little Daughter of President Homan The Latest Victim of Open Mill Race--Sixteen-Months-Old Baby of the New President of Willamette University Falls Through Grandstand on the University Grounds and is Drowned--Father Absent in Idaho and Mother Confined to Her Bed-Body is Recovered by Oregon Electric Employees at High Street--Little Ruth Homan, the 16-months-old daughter of President Fletcher Homan, of the Willamette university, is the fifth and last victim of the cold, swift and absolutely unprotected waters of south mill race and another otherwise happy household is plunged into the depths of grief thereby.
The saddest part of it all is that the father, Rev. Homan, is away from home, attending the Methodist confer-ence at Payette, Idaho, and the mother was confined to her bed with a ten days old baby in arms when the heart rending news of the tragic death of her child was broken to her.  Rev. Homan was reached by telegraph yester-day afternoon and he wired back that he would come home on the first train, and he will probably arrive this afternoon when funeral arrangements will be completed and announced.
Little or nothing is known of how the little tot happened to fall into the race.  She was playing with her little brother and other children up on the baseball grounds of the univer-sity yesterday morning and was not missed for some time and it is supposed that she climbed into the grandstand, and fell through the large aperatures between the seats.  The body was discovered floating, feet upwards, down the mill race, near High street, by George Lewis, operator for the oregon Electric railway.  He was just in time to grasp the clothing of the child when the switching crew of the Southern Pacific arrived upon the scene and assisted in getting the body out.  Among those who helped to get the body out were Joe McCann, Guy Simmons and D.G. Sherman.
Drs. Robertson and Morse were immediately notified of the occurrence and Dr. Robertson hastened to the scene but all efforts to resuscitate the drowned child were unavailing and Dr. Robertson stated that she had been dead at least 40 minutes.  The child had not been missed by her playmates for several minutes when they reported the fact to the invalid mother and an organized search was at once instituted but no trace of the child could be found until the news of the finding of the body was communicated to the distracted mother.
Dr. G.V. Ellis, who has been in attendance upon Mrs. Homan during her recent illness, was telephoned to as soon as the loss of the child was discovered.  The shock of course completely unnerved her and she was considered in serious condition for a short time.  As soon as he could get away Dr. Ellis hurried to the tele-graph office to get in communication with Dr. Homan.
President Homan succeeded President J.H. Coleman to the head of Willamette university about three months ago, and, having been unable to find a suitable house to rent, occupied apartments in the Ladies' hall of the university temporarily.  Beside the drowned child, which was exceptionally bright and strong for her age, Rev. and Mrs. Homan have four other child-ren, three sons, aged 17, 15, and 10 respectively, and an infant daughter of about ten days.
This makes about the fifth victim of the cruel waters of the south mill race within the past few years and the residents of the contiguous territory through which it passes threaten to rise up in righteous indignation against the nuisance and will organize a campaign to have the ditch covered from the eastern boundaries to the city limits to High street, the end of the danger zone.  Among the little tots who have been sacrificed at this alter of carelessness and negligence are the little son of the late R.S. Wallace, the son of W.T. Rigdon and the son of the late Dr. A.A. Jessup." DOS Aug 18, 1908 1:1-3

Cremains buried 19 Jun 2022.  Tom Hooker passed away peacefully on the morning of August 17 from natural causes. He was born in Dallas, Oregon on May 25, 1926 to Thomas B. and Winona G. (Lewis) Hooker. His father served as Polk County Sheriff for 28 years. Tom graduated from Dallas High School in 1944 and immediately enlisted in the Navy. He served in World War II in the South Pacific from 1944 to 1946. Upon his discharge, he attended Oregon State University and graduated with a degree in Business in 1950. He went to work for the State of Oregon in various capacities for the next 28 years finishing his career as Director of Finance at SAIF. In 1952 Tom marred June Davis. Over the next three years, they moved to Salem and had children Steven and Linda. Tom was a man of firm self-discipline. When he was informed in 1960 that he was going blind from Retinitis Pigmentosa he immediately quit driving for fear of injuring someone. When he decided to quit smoking he did it cold turkey. Tom was preceded in death by June in 2015 and grandson Scotty in 1992. Survived by his children: Steve (Vicki) Hooker and Linda (Bill) Delano and his grandchildren: Joshua (Andrea) Tharp, Katie (Deric) Grondin and Elise (Zachary) Maines. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to OHSU's Casey Eye Institute, Retinitis Pigmentosa Fund.” The Statesman Journal, Salem, Oregon from Aug. 18 to Aug. 23, 2020.

"Laid to Rest--Little Lillie May Hostetler Was Buried Yesterday--The remains of the late Lillie M. Hostetler, the 9-year-old daughter of Edward Hostetler, of this city, were brought to Salem by the 11 o'clock train yesterday morning from The Dalles, where the little one died on Sunday.  The grief-stricken father accompanied the remains.  With him came his brother, J.C. Hostetler, of The Dalles, and Mrs. A.C. Geiger, a sister of the child's mother.
The remains were met at the station by Rev. and Mrs. W.C. Kantner, a delegation from the Congregational Sunday school and one from Olive lodge, No. 18, I.O.O.F., accompanied by a hearse, and were conveyed to the St. Helen's boarding hall, corner Chemeketa and High streets.
At the latter place the funeral services were conducted at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, Rev. Kantner officiating.  A large number of sympathizing friends and members of the deceased's Sunday school class and teacher from the Congregational church were present in a body, as were Prof. Long and the pupils of Central school, and a delegation of the local Odd Fellows.
The pallbearers were Lillie's friends and classmates, who thus made manifest their last token of love and esteem for one whom they had loved so well, but who was now parted from them forever; they were Willie Kantner, Milton Ehlen, Robbie Duncan, Chester Rineman, Claude Bell and Caples Matthieu.
After the services at the house, the funeral cortege formed and proceeded to Lee Mission  cemetery--where all that was earthly of Lillie May Hostet-ler was laid to rest by the side of her mother, who crossed the valley of the shadow of death only one short month ago.  The sympathy of a large circle of acquaintances and friends is extended to the father, who, in the short space of thirty days, lost both wife and child."   "At the family home, on Mission and Fourteenth streets, Depot addition, Salem, October 23, 1894, the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Houston, aged 4 months and 19 days.
The death of the little one was quite mysterious.  Yesterday morning the father on preparing to leave home for his work (being a deliveryman for John Hughes) went to the bed to kiss the little one good-bye.  As he did so he noticed that the face was cold and the little hands in a cramped condition.  Startled at this he hurried down town for a physician who, on reaching the house, made examination of the child and pronounced it dead.  This was a fearful shock to the parents, as the little one seemed to be in good health on Monday.  The supposition is that its death was caused by convulsions some time during Monday night.  The funeral will be held at the residence at 2:30 p.m., Rev. J. M. Shulse officiating.  Interment will be in Lee Mission cemetery."  OS Oct 24, 1894 4:4
