LABARE, John Wesley

  "Another Pioneer Called By Death---John Wesley LeBare, a resident of Marion county since 1875, died shortly after 7 o'clock Saturday evening at the home at 1745 Lee street at the age of 91 years.  He was one of the few remaining veterans of the Civil War.  Mr. LeBare fell two weeks ago while visiting at the home of a son in Wren, and had been up and down since that time.
  Mr. LeBare was born in Ohio February 2, 1838, and grew to manhood there.  He served two enlistments in the Civil War, one from Ohio and one from Illinois.  In 1875 he came to Oregon, farming for some years in the Waldo Hills district.  About 35 years ago he moved to a small farm east of the fairgrounds, where he remained until retiring and moving to town 15 years ago.  The first Mrs. LeBare died in April, 1908, and in July, 1910, he was married in Salem to Cordelia Morris Hull, who was born and reared in this county.  He was a member of Sedgwick post of the G.A.R., and a life member of the Methodist church.
  Besides his widow, Cordelia, he is survived by the following children:  Mrs. Olive Riches of Silverton, Bruce LeBare of Spokane, Harry LeBare of St. Helens and Frank and Archa Archie LeBare of Wren and 17 grandchildren.   Three step-children also survive:  Gordon J. Hull and Mrs. Nora Dirr of Portland and Mrs. Bessie Barker of Salem.  No funeral arrangements have been made."  OS Nov 3, 1929 2:5

"Edith C. LaBorde-- July 5, 1912 - June 24, 2006--
SALEM - Edith C. LaBorde was born in Salem to Lucian and Adelaide Cleghorn Clement. Edith attended schools in Salem and graduated from University of Oregon. She married George P. LaBorde on October 15, 1949.
Edith was an avid skier, mountain climber and world traveler. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and P.E.O.
Edith is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, George; twin children; brothers, Norris and Henry Clement; and sister, Mary Elizabeth Barrett.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., Fri., June 30 at City View Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Sat., July 1 at First Presbyterian Church, followed by vault interment at Lee Mission Cemetery. Contributions may be made to Oregon State Chapter P.E.O.   She was born in McMinnville and resided in Lincoln City for 40 years.  She married Raymond G. Lacey Sr. on April 15, 1915 in Vancouver, Wash.  He died in 1963.  She was a member of Order of Eastern Star and Sunset Chapter No. 163.
  She is survived by her son, Arthur of Lincoln City.
  At the family's request, no services will be held.  Arrangements are by Pacific View mortuary, Lincoln City.

  "Wecoma Beach--Services for Raymond G. Lacey, 73, Polk County native and former Salem resident who died here Tuesday after a lengthy illness, will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at North Lincoln Funeral Home.
  Interment will be at Jason Lee Cemetery in Salem.
  Born at Parker in Polk County, Lacey moved to Salem in 1926.  He was an electrician at the former Hunt Brothers Cannery until he retired in 1951.
  He and his wife, Hazel, then moved to Wecoma Beach where they operated Lacey's Doll House.

"Alice Clough Van Osdol Lambert was born April 28, 1914 in Tacoma, Washington. She died May 3, 2017 at her home in Salem.  As a child, she lived in logging camps around Oregon and Idaho. Her dad, Leslie, was a logger and her mom, Amy, was the camp cook.
   Alice and Vernon Van Osdol were married in 1930. They lived in Turner many years. After they retired they were snowbirds in Arizona. Vernon died in 1990. In 1998 Alice married André Lambert and moved to Salem. They enjoyed the senior dances every week.
Alice is survived by daughters, Kathleen Standley, Carons City, Nevada, Linda Korkeakoski, Turner, Oregon; grandsons, Lee Mayes, Ahti Jr., Esa & Antti Korkeakoski; granddaughters, Sheri Roberts, Debra Chaput, Pam Kellog, Kim Horton; and many great- and great-great-grandchildren.  Alice was preceded in death by her husbands, Vernon and André, baby Ramond Van Osdol, sister Mary Dimmitt, granddaughter Lisa Mayes.
   A memorial will be held at 1pm on June 10 at Turner Fire Hall. A potluck will follow for family and friends. Heritage Memorial is assisting the family." [Statesman Journal May 17, 2017

Bush, died Friday at the resident at 1140 North 14th street at the age of 52 years.  He was a native of Neuchetel, Switzerland, from which country he came here 17 years ago.  His mother Cecille is living in Switzerland and is now 94 years old.
  Mr. Lambert is survived by his widow, Marie, and four children, Edward, Andre, John and Marie Antoinette, all of Salem.  A brother and four sisters also live in the old country.

  "Died From His Injuries--Andrew Lansing Is Now a Corpse--Hurt In A Livery Stable--Passed Away Yesterday Morning at a Front Street Boarding House--Relatives in the East--Andrew Lansing, the young man who was injured at Radabaugh & Francis livery stable about 4 p.m. Monday last by being struck on the back of the head and shoulders with a bale of hay, falling from the upper story of the stable, died at the Crum boarding house yesterday morning about 9:30 o'clock and his remains are now at Olinger & Rigdon's undertaking parlors, on Court street.
  His nephew, W.J. Lansing, is employed at the same livery stable and was the one who was dumping the hay from the loft at the time the accident happened.  Three brothers survive him--Albert Lansing, airbrake inspector in the railroad yards at Ogden, Utah, and George, and William Lansing, at Atlantic, Iowa.  They have been informed of his death by telegraph, and no answer from them concerning the disposition of the body had been received up to a late hour last night.
  The decedent was 35 years old and bore and excellent reputation as an honest and industrious young man.  He became a resident of Salem last June.  To Salem people he was best known as `Bert'.
  The remains will be interred in Lee Mission cemetery at 2 p.m.; a burial services will be conducted at the grave by Rev. John Parsons, of the First M.E. church." OS Nov 2, 1899 5:5

  Mr. Lansing was a native of New York state, where he was married in 1851.  He came to Oregon in 1893, since which time he has made his home, with Rev. W.R. Winans in South Salem, Mrs. Winans being a daughter of deceased.  The funeral services will be conducted at the residence at 9:30 this morning, and at the First M.E. church at 10:30.  He leaves a wife and one daughter, Mrs. Winans, to mourn his demise."   "Edward Lansing died at his home on the Garden road, April 8, aged 67 years.
  Mr. Lansing was born February 17, 1846, in Iowa, where he spent his boyhood days.  On July 4, 1869, he was united in marriage to Miss Nettie Griepie and twelve children were born to this union, eight daughters and four sons, six daughters surviving him.
  Mr. Lansing came to Oregon about thirteen years ago and has spent most of this time in and around Salem.  He was the grandfather of twenty-one grandchildren and eight great-grand-children.
  He leaves a wife and six daughters--Mrs. Emma Wilson of Iowa; Mrs. Nettie Wilson, Mrs. Ethel Wilson, Mrs. Clara Homyer, Mrs. Edna Griggs and Miss Grace Lansing, all of Salem.
  The funeral was held from the residence Thursday afternoon and interment took place at Lee Mission cemetery,  Rev. P.S. Knight officiating.  Members of the G.A.R. had charge of the ceremonies at the grave.  The flowers were abundant and beautiful and the funeral was one of the largest held in the city for some time."   "Death of Wm. Lansing--A telegram received in Salem Friday July 12, from Ogden, Utah, brought to his mother, sisters, and many friends, the sad news of the death of Will Lansing, formerly of this city.  The first news of his illness was received by telegraph July 3, and his father, Wm. Lansing, left on the morning of the 4th and was at his son's bedside when death came.
  William Jerome Lansing was born in Fredonia, Kansas, February 14, 1874, and died in Ogden, Utah, July 11, 1901, aged 27 years and four months.
  Typhoid fever was the cause.
  When about one year old, he moved with his parents to Atlantic, Iowa, where he lived until February, 1899, when he came to Salem, and has since made his home here.
  He went to Ogden five weeks ago to accompany his uncle, A.E. Lansing, of Ogden, to Deeth, Nevada, where they were to work on a contract.  Shortly after arriving in Deeth he was taken ill, and as there were no doctors there he went back to Ogden to his uncle's home but soon became so bad that he was  removed to the hospital where he died.
  Deceased was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Lansing, of Salem, and leaves beside his parents, seven sisters to mourn his loss, and a multitude of sympathizing friends.
  His sisters are: Mrs. Fred Wilson, of Atlantic, Iowa, Mrs. Frank Wilson, of Seattle, Washington, Mrs. Otis Riggs, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and the Misses Clara, Grace, Edna and Ethel of Salem.
  The remains arrived in Salem, Sunday and the funeral was held at the family residence, corner 17th and D streets Monday morning, July 15 at 10 o'clock.  The A.O.U.W. of which the deceased was a highly respected member, had charge of the funeral.
  The sermon at the house was preached by Rev. Wm. Manning of the First Christian church of this city, and the Order conducted the services at the grave in a very impressive manner.  Interment was at Lee Mission cemetery.

  "Pauline B. Leabo of Salem Passes--Pauline B. Leabo, widow of the late Augustus C. Leabo, died Friday night at the family residence at 1880 Court street after an illness dating from last Monday, when she suffered a stroke.  Prior to that time Mrs. Leabo had been most active, particularly in work of the Woman's Relief Corps of which she was a member.  Her husband, who died here July 18, 1926, was a Civil war veteran.
  Mrs. Leabo was born in Clermont county, Ohio, and with her husband came to Salem nearly 40 years ago.  They lived here for some time, later moving to southern Oregon and again coming here ten years ago from Oakland, Oregon.  She was a member of the First Methodist church.
  Surviving relatives include two children: Mrs. A.G. Hallin of Salem and R.H. Leabo of Portland; six grandchildren: A.W. King, of Sacramento, R.L. King of Bellingham, H.M. Hallin of Portland, Mrs. J. Donnegan of Sheridan and Gwendolyn Hallin and Reas Hallin of Salem; also eight great grandchildren.

  Beneath this sod, the first ever broken in Oregon for the reception of a white mother and child, lie the remains of Anna Maria Pittman, first wife of Rev. Jason Lee and her infant son.  She sailed from New York in July 1836, landed in Oregon June 1837, was married July 16th, 1837 and died June 26, 1838, age 35 years.  In the full enjoyment of the love which constraineth her to leave all for Christ and heathen souls.

  "Mrs. Anna Pitman Lee--The Sunday Statesman of December 27, 1903, contains a very interesting editorial under the heading of `Rev. Jason Lee,' and closes with the wording on the marble slab now over the remains of the first white mother and child interred in the soil of Oregon, as if the writer believes that Lee cemetery first received the remains of that most pathetic life in the missionary history of Oregon.
  The writer of this became claimant of the original M.E. mission site at Wilamet in August, 1845, by purchase from David Carter, one of the assist-ant missionaries, who purchased it of Rev. George Geary, agent of the board of missions, in 1844.
  The bodies of Mrs. Lee and babe then lay in the shade of a small fir grove, within easy rifle shot of the entrance to the main mission building.  All fencing around the buildings, the garden and the graves, had been swept away by the high flood of December 1844, and as the marks of high water were from 4 to 6 inches upon the window casing, it must have swept from 6 to 10 feet deep over the graves of those interred, as it was lower ground than the building; but the head and foot boards on the graves had not been lifted, and many a time between my cleaning the house for occupancy, in September, and vacating it to a new owner in February, 1846, I read the wording on the head board over Mrs. Lee, according to memory thus: `Lord, we have left all and followed Thee; What shall we have therefor?'
  It was in the early `50s, I saw and read the same head board over what must have been temporary graves, near ordinary high water mark, in Mill street, Salem, near the east end of the present board walk to the O.R. & N. wharf.  The bodies must have been brought there by steamer, but by whom removed to Lee cemetery, where I next read the question, I am not informed.  The fact that the cemetery is on the D.L. claim of the late J.L.    "Salem-- Roy "Eddie" Levin was born in Alabama to Linda (deceased) and Robert Levin on January 19th 1967. He grew up in Chicago, Illinois before joining the Army and was stationed in Germany. He followed an Army friend to Salem, Oregon and began some of the greatest legacies of his life: The birth of his first son, Dionysus Shaman Levin; his 40¢ journey; and the birth of his 3 youngest children. Eddie took so many under his wing and helped them find their way. He truly was a Father Of All. Part of all of us forever.
   Roy "Eddie" Allen Levin was preceded in death by his mother Linda Sandell and beloved grandparents. He is survived by his life partner Christa Green; his four children: Dionysus Shaman Levin, David Aaron Levin, Marion Ullyssa Levin, and Isabella Levin; his father Robert Levin and stepmother Nancy Levin; his brothers David, Mark, Mike, and James and sisters Sandra, Sarah, and Cheryl; and by the many friends and family he was so fortunate to have.

    "SALEM - Art passed away unexpectedly at Salem Hospital. He was born in Springfield, Mass. to Arthur W. Levy and Grace Kingsbury. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War. Art worked in construction for many years in the Salem area. He attended aviation school in Broomfield, Colo. and became a licensed aircraft mechanic, employed at Salem Executive Flight Center at the Salem Airport.
    He is survived by his wife, Janet; sons, Robert, Sam, Tim and Gunner of Salem; father, Arthur W. Levy of Fla.; sister, Diane McGrath of Colo.; brothers, John of Colo. and Bob of Fla.; aunt, Louise Kay of Okla.; and many, many friends.

  Deceased was well known in this city, where she has resided for many years.  She was born in Blenerhassett Island, West Virginia. She was a woman of lovely character, and made friends wherever she went.  She leaves five children to mourn her loss, all of whom were at her bedside when the end came.  Her husband preceded her several years ago.  She had been ailing for several months past.  The children are L.H.   "A Young Greek Dies Suddenly--Heavy Voltage Enters Body of Peter Lewis--Inquest Today--Peter Lewis, a young Greek 23 years of age, was instantly killed yesterday morning at 10:30 by catching hold of a cable stretched from one pole to another and bringing it into contact with a feed wire on the Oregon Electric line about ten miles north of the city.
  It seems that the young man was passing a mudhole and to steady himself he reached to the cable, and bringing it in contact with the feed wire stretched from pole to pole, the man was electrocuted.  The cable had been stretched from near the top of one pole to the bottom of another.
  Coroner Clough will hold an inquest over the body today at 2 o'clock.  An interpreter from Portland is in the city and will be present at the in-quest to lend assistance in the matter of inquiring into the cause of the death of his fellow countryman.  Lewis was unmarried."  OS Jul 9, 1912 1:7

  "R.H. Lewis Is Dead--Passed Away at Macleay Yesterday--Was Thrice Stricken By Paralysis--On yesterday at 1:30 p.m., August 8th, 1902, at the home of his son, Levin H., one mile west of Macleay, Richard H. Lewis peacefully passed away.  Mr. Lewis had been a sufferer from inflamatory rheumatism for over eight years, and during the last three years had been unable to walk even upon crutches.  Added to this, deceased was thrice stricken with paralysis.  During this time his devoted wife and loving children spared no pains to make smooth the rough journey over which destiny had dictated that he should pass.
  Mr. Lewis was born in Wood county, West Virginia, in that section known as `Washington's Bottom', January 8th, 1832.  Seven years afterward, just across the Ohio river, or in the midst of it, on the historical `Blanner-basset Island,' his future wife, Mary Ann Harwood, was born, their acquaintance dating almost from this event.  They were married May 28th, 1856, and lived upon this famous plantation for a number of years.  To them were born one son, Levin H., and five daughters, Mrs. Josephine  Vass, Mrs. Eulalee Mann, Mrs. Ella B. Cutler, and Miss Lillian M. Lewis, now all of Salem, and Mrs. Cora Beardmore, now of James-town, Kansas. In 1872 the family moved to Kansas, and in the year 1889 emigrated to Oregon, since which time the various members of the family have contributed material social wealth to our most respectful citizenship.  The funeral will be conducted by Rev. J.P. Early, at the place of demise, on Sunday, August 10th, at 10 o'clock a.m.  Interment will be had at the Mission Cemetery, northeast of Salem." OS Aug 9, 1902 1:4-5

"Falls From Tree; Neck Is Broken--John Lippiold, 57, who lived at 297 South Fifteenth street, almost was instantly killed shortly after 10 o'clock this morning when he fell from a walnut tree in a lot at the corner of Seventeenth and Ferry streets and struck on his face, breaking his neck.
  Just how the accident occurred no one seems to know.  Lippiold was picking walnuts and was about 15 feet from the ground when suddenly he was seen to plunge down thru the branches clutching frantically at every twig within his reach in an effort to check the fall.  He hit the ground on his face and his neck was broken just below the base of the skull.
  Neighbors rushed immediately to his assistance and an ambulance and a physician were called; but Lippiold was dead before the doctor arrived.
  Mr. Lippiold leaves his wife, four daughters, Mrs. M.D. Jarvis, Davenport, Wn.; Elsie Lippiold, Sandy, Ore.; Lois and Marie Lippiold, of this city; and a son, Paul Lippiold, also of Salem.

She married Elmer Lively on March 1, 1941. He died in 1989. She retired from the State of Oregon in 1973. She enjoyed sewing, cooking and bowling. She loved being an Oregon tour guide for visiting family and friends. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Tommy, Ora and Frank Anderson and sisters, Virgil Moor and Bessie Anderson.
   Survivors include her sons, Don Bibens of Salem and Bill Lively of Oakley, Calif. and daughter, Barbara Thomas of Fresno, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Johnnie Anderson.

  "Mrs. Lovell Dies, Services Set Thursday--Mrs. Cora B. Lovell, widow of an early valley minister, the Rev. G.L. Lovell, died Monday night in a local hospital.  She had been in poor health for the past year.
  Mrs. Lovell, 76, had been a resident of Oregon since 1900 when she and her husband, who died in 1941, started missionary and church work in Independence for the Evangelical Church.
  The couple later lived in Brooks and for a short time in Eastern Oregon before returning to the Willamette Valley.  Mrs. Lovell had been a resident of Salem for the past 27 years.
  Born in Lycoming County, Pa., May 7, 1877, Mrs. Lovell was married in that state Aug. 4, 1898.
  She was an active member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church.
  Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Karl G. Becke and Miss Margaret E. Lovell, both of Salem; three sons, Dow H. Lovell, Salem, Clinton H. Lovell, Portland, and James H. Lovell, Hermiston; one sister, Mrs. Bessie Wood, and one brother, Harry A. Harper, both of Pennsylvania; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

  "Former Salem Pastor Dies At Portland--Former pastor of the First Evangelical church in Salem, the Rev. George L. Lovell died Saturday morning at his home in Portland following an illness of several weeks.
  The funeral service is to be held from the Willamette Boulevard Evangel-ical church in Portland at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Rev. Hubert Bennett, pastor, in charge, assisted by Rev. C.P. Bates, Rev. C.C. Poling and Rev. E.W. Petticord, music under direction of Mrs. Edith Yates McClure.  Interment is to be at Lee Mission cemetery, Salem.
  Born December 15, 1873, at Linden, PA., George Lovell attended Muncey Normal school and New Berlin college, taught for three years in public school and following his graduation from New Berlin received his first pastorate at Penn's Creek in 1899.
  In 1898 he married Cora B. Harper.  In 1900 they moved to Oregon, where his first appointment was as pastor at Independence. Later he served churches at Brooks, Pendleton, Irrigon, Florence, Salem and Portland.  In 1920 he was elected presiding elder of the Oregon district of his denomination and in the same year was appointed pastor of the Portland First church.  In May, 1939, he was retired from the Milwaukie church and had since made his home in Portland.
  Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Cora B. Lovell; children, Mrs. Helen Becke and Dow H. Lovell of Salem, Clinton H., James H. and Margaret Lovell of Portland, five grandchildren, Marion and Marjorie Becke and Kay and Tommy Lovell of Salem and Clinton H. Lovell, jr., of Portland.

David was a loving and charismatic young man who could light up a room with his energy and electric smile. He had a knack for making others feel loved and cherished, often lifting their spirits with his hugs and infectious positivity.
    He had a passion for cars, karaoke, and dancing, which brought him joy and allowed him to express himself freely.
    David is survived by his mother, Valerie Luna; sisters Isabella Marie, Destiny Monique, and Sara Delia; brother Daniel Jacob; Grandmother Maria Elena; girlfriend Rebeca Angelina; devoted aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of friends.
