"Buried By Friends--R.M. Tabor, aged about 55 years, a civil
engineer by profession, was sent to the insane asylum from Portland
last September and died in that institution Monday. He had no
relatives in this country, but has a brother and sister in
England. He was formerly associated with R.A. Habersham in
engineering work up the Columbia river and Mrs. Habersham, accompanied
by Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan and Attorney A.L. Frazier came up from
Portland yesterday morning to see proper respect paid to their dead
friend. The remains were conveyed from Rigdon & Olinger's
undertaking rooms to Lee Mission cemetery, where they were laid to

A Salem resident the past 26 years, Mr. Tadlock was born July 9,
1878, at Oden, Ill.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Ida Mae Jones, Salem, and
Mrs. Ruby Brown, Spring Valley, Calif.; a son, George Sherwood, Veneta;

husband, Rev. William Taft, a Methodist pastor, died in 1930. She
was a member of First Methodist Church here.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Frank DeWitt and Mrs. Ivan
Merchant, both Salem; son, Fred C. Blake, San Mateo, Calif.; four
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Private funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at W.T.

He was a retired farmer. His memberships included the
Masonic Lodge No. 72 in Canyonville and the First Christian Church in
Salem.
Survivors include his sisters, Wilma and Mary Talbot, both of
Salem; and cousin and caregiver, Esther Brown of Salem.
Visiting will be from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today at Restlawn
mortuary. Services will begin at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the

Thayer lived in Salem from the time he retired from United
Brethren Church ministry in the east in 1960 until 1969. He was a
member of Englewood United Methodist Church here. His wife Tina
died here in 1961.
He was born in Grand Valley, Pa., and ministered churches in New
York and Pennsylvania.
He leaves sons Orla A. Thayer, Waldport, Russell I. Thayer of
Newport and Malcolm L. Thayer of Simi Valley, Calif.; sisters Mrs. Fern
Gross of Corsica, Pa., and Mrs. Pauline Durham of Cory, Pa.; brother

year for treatment of a heart ailment. She had been in ill health
for many years, relatives said.
Survivors include the widower, Lawrence O. Thayer; three sons,
Russell, at home; Malcolm, Los Angeles and Orla Thayer of Waldport,
Ore.; two sisters and several brothers, and four grandchildren.
Mrs. Thayer moved to Salem in January of 1960 from New
York. She attended Englewood Evangelical United Brethern Church.

"Death Takes Mrs. Thomas, Salem Singer--Mrs. Gladys M. Thomas,
long active in Salem music circles and a former member of several
choral groups here, died Monday at a local hospital. She was 47.
Mrs. Thomas was born Gladys McIntyre, March 3, 1903, in Rolla,
N.D. She moved to Salem while still a youngster and was graduated
from Salem high school and later, in 1924, from Willamette university.
She also attended Chicago Musical college and while in Chicago
was married in 1930 to Horace J. Thomas who survives her in Salem.
Mrs. Thomas formerly sang with the Salem Oratorio society and
with the First Presbyterian church choir. She also was a member
of the Salem branch of the American Association University Women.
Surviving, besides the widower, are her mother, Mrs. Ora
McIntyre Hutcheon, Salem, and a sister, Mrs. Orma Higgins, Fields
Landing, Calif.
Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon
from the Clough-Barrick chapel with Dr. Chester W. Hamblin officiating.

"The Grim Messenger Summons Three More Souls from the Capital
City's Midst--Yesterday morning at 11 o'clock death invaded the home of
J.I. Thompson, of this city, calling thence his beloved wife, Mrs.
Elizabeth Thompson, at the age of 53 years.
Death came as a culmination of a nervous malady, from which she
has suffered for a long while, and against which she has striven
patiently and bravely.
Mrs. Thompson was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Dyer, of
Salt Creek, Polk county, and was a native of the state of Iowa.
She became the wife of Mr. Thompson on December 10, 1863, and to them
have been born six children, the only surviving one of whom is Dr. Hugh
H. Thompson, of San Francisco; the parents, passing throught the awful
ordeal of losing the other five children in the month of March, 1877,
during the dread scourge of diphtheria then prevalent in this valley.
For over a score of years the members of the family have been
valued and highly respected residents of this city, where decedent
enjoyed the invariable love and good will of all whose good fortune
brought them into social and friendly contact with her." WOS Nov 4,

"Lauretta Naomi Thompson, 83, of Salem, died Thursday.
She was born in Ivesdale, Ill. She moved to Medford from
San Jose, Calif., in 1956 and came to Salem in 1959. She moved to
Aurora in 1962 and returned to Salem in 1973. She was a
psychiatric aide at Fairview Hospital & Training Facility from 1960
to 1962 and at Dammasch Hospital from 1962 to 1971, when she
retired. She was a member of Court Street Christian Church.
Survivors include her son Glenn M. Works of Rome, Italy;
daughters Dora M. Furniss of Sacramento and Ida J. Curry of Santa
Clara, Calif.; stepsons Ronald Thompson of Dufur, Melvin Thompson of
Santa Clara, Ore., Anson Thompson of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Gordon
Thompson of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; stepdaughters Florence
Guthrie of Amity and Jessie Edwards of Portland; brothers Virgil D.
Stover of Lake Park, Minn., and Loren C. Stover of Oconto, Wis.; and

until 1878 when they came to Salem where they have ever since resided.
One child, a daughter-Mrs. Mary Ferguson of Portland-was born to
them. She will arrive in this city on the 11 o'clock train this
morning.
The funeral will take place at the First M.E. church tomorrow at
10 a.m., and burial will be in Lee Mission cemetery. Rev. Geo. W.

The bereaved husband is a harness maker and saddler and for
several years worked in the Dearborn estab-lishment in Salem. He

"This Pioneer and Prominent Citizen Passes Out Almost With The
Year--He Died at His Home in This City at Half Past Eight O'clock on
Sunday Evening, December Thirtieth--Well Known All Over Oregon.
At his home in this city, near the corner of Cottage and Ferry
streets, surrounded by the members of his family and loving friends,
Robert M. Thompson passed peacefully to his eternal rest at 8:30
o'clock Sunday evening, December 30, 1906. He went out almost
with the old year.
Mr. Thompson was born May 24, 1834, in Belmont county,
Ohio. Had he lived till next May, he would have been 73 years of
age. In 1851 when a mere boy he left his Ohio home and went to
the California mines, where he worked around Nevada City and other
camps for ten years. He was induced to go from Ohio to California
partly on account of the suckness sic with tubercu-losis of a
brother, who hoped to receive benefit from the change of climate, but
who died in the Golden State.
In 1861 Mr. Thompson came to Oregon, stopping at first in
Douglas county. In 1863 he came to Salem, and had called this
city his home during all the years since. He first worked in a
saw mill in Salem. Then he was appointed assistant warden of the
Oregon state penitentiary, during the first administration of Governor
Grover, while Wm. Watkins was superintendent. In 1874, while
serving as assistant warden, he was married to Miss Thankful Driver,
who survives him. Soon after this, under the second Grover
administration, he was made warden of the penitentiary. After
this, he served for a time as deputy sheriff of Multnomah county.
He came back to Salem and worked for a period in a foundry, and
afterwards, with his wife, conducted the Thompson house, now the Salem
Hotel, for eight years.
After this, Mr. Thompson worked in the foundry at the
penitentiary for a time, and in 1893 he was appointed store keeper in
the United States custom house at Portland, which posi-tion he held up
to the time of his death, though he had not been at his post for
several months, during which time he was confined at his home
here. He was a great sufferer, but a most patient one and even up
to the last hour was composed and continuously expressing his feeling
of thankfulness that he was to go while surrounded by such faithful
ones of his own family and immediate friends and close neighbors.
No word of protest or complaint passed his lips, though he knew the
tide of life was slowly ebbing, as it had been for weeks.
His complaint was dropsy, which was complicated with several
other troubles that followed it.
Mr. Thompson leaves a faithful wife and one married daughter,
Mrs. C.L. Latourette, and one son, Bush Thompson, a young boy, aged
about 13 years. They were all with him during his last sickness
and at the end. Mr. Latourette has been in Michigan,
preparing a home there, near Grand Rapids, but is now on his way to
Oregon. Three children of the family are dead.
There are two brothers of the deceased in Montana and three
brothers and a sister in Illinois.
Rev. I.D. Driver, father of Mrs. Thompson, is at Sunnyside,
where he preached last evening. He will be here this forenoon.
The deceased had a host of warm friends in Salem and Portland
and throughout the state. He had been prominent in politics, and
had been a true friend to all in whom he trusted.
The funeral will be at 2 o'clock this (Tuesday) afternoon, from
the house, and the burial will be in Lee Mission cemetery. Rev.

Driver--Funeral Here Today--Mrs. Thankful Thompson died at Good
Samaritan hospital in Portland on Monday, March 2, at 9:30 a.m., as the
result of an operation performed two weeks ago today. At first,
the patient rallied and gave every promise of recovery. But heart
complications arose, resulting in her death.
Deceased was a daughter of Rev. I.D. Driver, deceased, who was
at one time one of the leading Methodist ministers of Oregon and of the
nation. She was born July 23, 1852, in the Powder river valley in
Oregon, while her parents were crossing the plains to Oregon.
Married in Salem--She was married in Salem in the seventies to
Robert M. Thompson, who died here seven years ago last December
31st. They made their home in Salem during all the years, and
Mrs. Thompson still called this city home; though Mr. Thompson was for
a long time before his death storekeeper for the United States custom
house in Portland.
Five children were born to them, two surviving. They are
Bush Thompson, now living in Plainfield, Mich., and Thankful Georgia,
now Mrs. Charles L. Latourette, living near Shelbyville, Mich.
During the past two years, up to last April, Mrs. Thompson had
been with her daughter and son-in-law, in Michigan. She came home
on a visit, and when she expected to return to Michigan last fall, she
was unable to go, on account of sickness.
Lived Here Long Time--Deceased was well known in Salem, where
she spent most of her active life, and she had many friends here.
The funeral will be held at the Rigdon undertaking parlors at 2
p.m. today, and the burial will be in the family plot in Lee Mission

"Old Pioneer Dead---Theodore M. Thompson Was Formerly Instructor
At Indian School---Theodore M. Thompson, an old pioneer of Oregon, died
yesterday morning at his home on Cottage street, aged 73 years.
Mr. Thompson was born in Pennsylvania and came to Oregon in
1852. He settled in Dallas, Polk county, and engaged in the
harness making business. In 1864 he married Miss Stone, principal
of the La Creole Academy, of that city, and later moved to Salem, where
he worked for many years as harness maker for Dick Dear-born in this
city. He held a position for several years as instructor in
harness making and saddlery at the Salem Indian Training School, which
position he resigned about one year ago on account of failing
health. He was suffering from heart disease and gradually grew
weaker until the end came as the result of a complication of diseases
at 2:30 o'clock yesterday morning.
Deceased leaves a host of friends among the old pioneers of
Salem, and was well known for his honest, upright dealings. A
friend said of him yes-terday, "He never did a dishonest deed in his
life. In fact, he couldn't do such a thing, and a man could
depend upon any work of his being first class."
The funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon at
the resi-dence 167 Cottage street, conducted by Rev. William H. Heppe,
of the First M. E. church, and the remains will be laid to rest in Lee
Mission cemetery, beside those of his deceased wife, who died six years
ago. A number of old pioneer friends of the deceased will act in
the capacity of pall bearers.
The only relatives which the deceased leaves in this city or on
the coast is a daughter, Mrs. M.C. Ferguson, and a grandchild."

"Thorne Dies At Hospital Yesterday--Unfortunate Man Who On
December 14 Attempted Suicide in the Scott Hotel, Dropped Dead of Heart
Failure--William Thorne, who on Saturday afternoon, December 14,
slashed his throat and completely severed his windpipe with a
jack-knife in his apartments at the Scott Hotel, died Thursday
afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Salem hospital, where he had been
taken shortly after committing the act.
Thorne was thought to be gradually gaining strength until
yesterday at dinner, when he suddenly fell over and expired from heart
failure. He had been walking around in the hospital but a few
minutes before lunch time, and seemed to be feeling as well as usual.
Thorne was a native of New Zealand, and was 41 years of
age. He was a resident of Salem six years ago, at which time he
moved to California, and was ill in San Francisco at the time of the
earthquake. After his sickness there he went to Illinois, where
he resided until last June, when he returned to this city.
He owned a team of good horses, and, previous to his rash act,
had been engaged in work on the new Court street pavement. Six
dollars was found in his trousers when taken to the hospital, and it is
said that he has a snug bank account.
Before engaging apartments at the Scott Hotel Thorne had a room
at the home of Harry Hatch, the well-known mail carrier. Mr.
Hatch said that Thorne seem to be a man of steady habits. There
seems to be nothing known as to his relatives.
Dr. Carlton Smith, Thorne's physi-cian, said that Thorne told

"Death of Judge Thornton--The Noted Pioneer Passes Away Quietly
at His Residence, in Salem, Sunday Night, at 11:40--Hon. J. Quinn
Thornton, the venerable and well-known lawyer-pioneer, than whom none
of the early immigrants to the great northwest was better known and had
a greater influence in shaping its destinies, passed away quietly at
his residence in South Salem, Sunday at 11:40 p.m. Mr. Thornton
had been suffering a gradual decline for several years, and a
complication of diseases incident to old age, together with a
distressing bronchial affliction, were the causes of his disease, after
confinement to his bed of a number of weeks.
Mr. Thornton was born on the 24th of March, 1810, near Point
Pleasant, Mason county, Virginia. In his infancy, his parents
removed to Champaign county, Ohio. He was educated at the
University of Vir-ginia, studied law, and was admitted to
practice. He removed to Missouri in the year 1835, and settled in
Palmyra, Marion county, where he taught school, practiced law, and for
a short time edited a political paper. On the 8th of February,
1838, he married Mrs. Nancy M. Logue, at Hannibal, who had come to
Missouri as one of the teachers in West Ely college, an institution of
learning established by Rev. Dr. Ely, of Philadelphia, and others, of
the Presbyterian church. After his marriage, he removed to
Quincy, Illinois, and engaged in the practice of law.
In the spring of 1846, Judge Thornton started to Oregon with the
immigration of that year, arriving by the "southern route," after many
and great privations and losses, which he has elaborately detailed in
his work entitled "Oregon and California". He held, for a short
period, a position on the bench of the old provisional government of
Oregon. He served in the legislature of Oregon one term as
representative from Benton county, in 1864-5, and occupied a commanding
influence in that body. These, it is believed, are the only
public offices he ever held. In 1848 he made a visit to
Washington in a quasi-public capacity, and was instrumental in
forward-ing the organization of a territorial government for Oregon,
and seeing that the principal of the "Wilmot proviso" was incorporated
in the act, which prohibited the extension of slavery into the
territory. He was in close consultation with Benton, Douglas, and
other leading men of Congress, and by his persistent efforts he
succeeded (as he always claimed) in obtaining the grant of an
additional section of land in each township for school purposes in
Oregon, when congress had previously granted only one section to a
territory on its organization.
Judge Thornton was a man of great natural ability, and gifted
with an unusual facility of expression whenever he committed his
thoughts to paper. He was well read in all departments of history
and literature, and as a conversationist, in former days, he was rarely
excelled, but an unfortunate affliction of late years rendered talking
quite difficult and oppressive to him. He possessed great
individuality of character, and consequently held strong convictions,
which he was not backward in expressing, and which he was always ready
to maintain and defend with tongue, pen, or pistol. Of this
latter fact many early settlers in Oregon are aware, and although for
years he was the `best abused' man in the state, no one ever offered
him a personal indignity and escaped instant castigation. As an
instance of his determination to defend his opinions and the freedom of
speech at all hazards, it may be related that whilst publishing a paper
in Missouri, at the time of the murder of Lovejoy, at Alton,
Illinois, he commented rather freely in his columns upon the
occurrence, and in such a manner as to arouse the hostility of the
pro-slavery community, and, as usual on such occasions, a mob
surrounded the building with expressed purpose of demolishing the
office and lynching the editor. Mr. Thornton was then a young
man, but hearing of the intent-ions of the mob he armed himself and
barricaded his office, and when the crowd of infuriated men made its
appearance in the street opposite, he stepped out on the porch with a
loaded musket, and threatened death to the first man who should attempt
to enter the office unbidden. His boldness caused the mob to
hesitate, and Thornton then made a speech in which he announced his
position on the slavery question and the right of free speech so
clearly and unequivocally that he mollified his hearers, and, when he
closed, the crows quietly dispersed without further molesting him.
For the last sixteen years of his life Judge Thornton was a
resident of Salem. Before his removal to this place, he possessed
at one time a considerable amount of property, but it gradually slipped
out of his hands, and his declining years were clouded with poverty to
such a degree than he was compelled to part with his library piecemeal
to obtain the means of sustentation. Kind friends, however,
ministered to the wants of himself and wife, in many ways, both of
whom, to their everlasting honor let it be said, in all their days had
never turned the hungry and needy away from their door. Mrs.
Thornton still survives, in reasonable health for one of her age,
although, suffering from the inconvenience of deafness. Both
joined the Methodist church in early life, and have been consistent
members of that denomination ever since. They had no children.
The funeral will take place from the M.E. church to-morrow
morning at 10 o'clock, and it is expected that several of his old

4 o'clock in the afternoon, Mrs. M.N. Thornton, relic of the late Hon.
J. Quinn Thornton, aged about 72 years.
Mrs. Thornton was born and raised in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and
was educated for a teacher. In early life she came West, and
taught in Marion college, near Palmyra, Missouri, where she was married
to the late J. Quinn Thornton. In the spring of 1846 she and her
husband left Quincy, Ill, and started for Oregon, arriving here in the
fall, crossing the plains. They settled first at Oregon City,
afterward in Benton county, and finally in Salem, having lived here
since 1872. Her husband died in this city on the 5th of last
February. For years her health was very feeble and she went about
but little. Mrs. Thornton was exceedingly charitable, and her
life was a perpetual summer of good deeds. Oftentimes her acts of
kindness were misplaced, but the ridicule of the world had no effect
upon the kindness of her nature, nor caused her to swerve in the least
from her Christian pathway. With her, love never failed, and she
seemed to realize that without that heavenly quality she would become
as brass and a tinkling cymbal. She was highly endowed
intellectually, and her conversation flowed on in a constant stream,
delighting the listener with its freshness and beauty. Religion was
early professed by her, and for near sixty years she remained steadfast
in the faith of her girlhood days. Mrs. Thornton had no children,
but she leaves an adopted daughter, whom she had raised from infancy,

"James Tindall, 87, of Salem died Tuesday.
Born in Portland, he spent most of his life in Salem and
attended Oregon State University's College of Pharmacy. He
worked as a pharmacist, owning Tindall's Hollywood and Tindall's
Englewood drugstores for many years.
He also served on the Salem City Council from 1967 to 1972 and
as treasurer for the Order of Amaranth Cherry Court No. 19. He
was a past direct president of Lions International and volunteer with
the Lions Eye Bank program.
His wife, Mary, died in 1990.
Survivors include sisters, Vivian E. Lytle of Portland, Dorothy
Fieber of Toledo, Rosalie Danielson of Seattle, Patricia Binegar of
Medford and Denny Angus of Albany, Ga.

She was a member of the Hollywood Lions Auxiliary and past
matron of Cherry Court 19, Order of the Amaranth, and Jason Lee United

She is survived by her husband.

"Salem Man Found Dead On Side Road In Polk County Believed
Accident Victim--Independence, Or., March 17--Willard Tinker, of 1375
North Commer-cial street, Salem, was found dead on a side road leading
north from the Salem-Dallas highway near Brunk's Corners,
yesterday. Mrs. Vera Hyde and Mrs. Lennie Boone found a car
parked in the middle of the road and the body lying on the ground
shortly after 12 o'clock.
Coroner A.L. Keeney was notified and proceeded at once to the
scene of the accident.
A double barrelled hammerless shot-gun 12 gauge with the safety
lock in firing position was found with the trigger guard hooked over
the handle of the emergency brake. The gun contained two
discharged shells and examination of the body showed that death was
caused by a gunshot wound just at the base of the heart.
Mr. Tinker had left the home of Guy Vaughn, who lives near the
site of the accident, at about 11 o'clock having come from Salem to get
the gun which he had left there on a previous occasion. Mr.
Vaughn stated that there were two discharged shells in the gun when
Tinker took it away and that it was his belief that the dead man had
seen some small game near the road and had slipped in a shell and
stepped out of the car dragging the gun after him and discharging it by
accident. The muzzle of the gun was evidently very close to the
body when discharged as powder burns showed distinctly.
The remains were taken in charge by Coroner Keeney and removed
to the Keeney Chapel where it will be held for directions. Mrs.
Sophie Tinker, his wife, was notified by messenger and late Tuesday
night no definite plans had been made by the relatives.
Mr. Tinker was shop foreman at Vick Brothers garage in Salem for
five years, leaving last November to go into business with Roy Vincent.
Besides his wife he leaves a mother.
No inquest will be held.
Persons who visited the scene of the accident found the trigger
guard fitted tightly over the brake lever while the nature of the death
wound indicated the gun was in a nearly horizontal position when the
trigger was pulled. It was stated at the place of his former
employment that the dead man was subject to occasional melancholy

Forty Years A Resident Of Salem Died Yesterday--In the passing of
George Townsend, yesterday at the Salem hospital, Salem loses a
well-known resident, the deceased having lived here for forty
years. He was 58 years of age. He crossed the plains in
1864. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. R.S. Swartz and Mrs.
Laura A. Randall of Prosser, Wash., and one brother, Jefferson
Townsend, all of whom were at his bedside when the end came. He
was born in McHenry county, Ill.
The immediate cause of his death was cancer, but a most pathetic
feature of his long illness was his total blindness. About
fifteen years ago a splinter of wood entered one eye, causing him to
lose the sight of it, and about a year ago a similar accident deprived
him of the sight of the other eye.
The funeral will be held at 2:30 today from Lehman &

camp near Enright today. Details of the mishap were not received

Investigation by the state industri-al accident commission and
the Capital Journal today failed to reveal any relatives of the above
mentioned Frank Tucker in Salem. A man of that name was known to
some of the loggers here, but they knew nothing of his family.
The accident commission was notified by the Clement Logging
company, for whom Tucker worked, that the dead man was supposed to have

Besides his wife he leaves one son, Vincent, aged 5, one sister, Mrs.
T.B. Shaw of Mills City, and two brothers, Frank and William, who live
in Colorado.
The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock from the
United Brethren church and interment will be made in the Lee Mission
cemetery. The Rev. Geo. Chapman will have charge of the
services. Arrangements are in the hands of Webb and Clough, Salem
